Things to Do in Reykjanesbær
Reykjanesbær is the capital of Reykjanes and is a young, vibrant, and rapidly growing town on the peninsula. The town is bordered by Njarðvík and Keflavik.
Reykjanesbær is home to pristine natural scenery and cultural elements. When travelling in Iceland by car, this is a place you don’t want to miss. There’s plenty to do and see, especially if you're already in South Iceland.
Viking World Museum
The Viking World Museum commemorates the life and culture of the Vikings that settled Iceland centuries ago. The museum is home to a replica of the Gokstad Viking Ship, which is suspended in the air, allowing visitors to get an up-close look at the workmanship. Visitors can also tour the inside of the ship. |
The Icelandic Museum of Rock 'n' Roll
The Icelandic Museum of Rock 'n' Roll is one of the most unique places to visit in Reykjanesbær. The museum details the history and transformation of Icelandic pop and rock music, dating all the way back to 1830 and to present times.
In the museum, you'll find some of the most notable works of Icelandic artists portrayed, including:
- Páll Óskar Hjálmtýsson
- Sigur Rós
- Björk
- Mugison
- Of Monsters and Men
Duus Museum
Another worthwhile attraction in Reykjanesbær is the Duus Museum. The museum is an art and cultural center and has exhibition halls for concerts, local museums, and mixed cultural activities. In the Duus Museum, you'll find history, nature, and fine art.
Head outdoors and soak in the views of the beautiful Keflavik Bay. Follow one of the many footpaths, and you may just catch a quick glimpse of whales in the sea.
Bergid
Enjoy nature in its rawest form at Bergid. This is the ideal place for a clifftop walk over lava fields and open water. At Bergid, you can climb up to overlook the harbor and hear the waves breaking against the shore. This isn’t a hike for beginners, as getting to the top is a bit challenging. For less experienced hikers, try climbing the shorter cliffs where you can still see awesome ocean views.
Giantess Cave—Skessuhellir
Enjoy a beautiful waterfront cave that's home to a large troll sculpture when visiting Giantess Cave. The mysterious cave is located near the marina in Keflavík and has been open to the public since 2008.
The character inside of the cave comes from the story of Sigga and the Giantess. The Giantess stands over five metres high, and she is quite interactive! She breathes, burps, snores, and has other human-like traits that are sure to make kids and adults laugh.
Be sure to bring a pen and piece of paper with you so that you can leave a letter in the mailbox inside of the cave!
Stekkjarkot
Take a step back in time with a trip to Stekkjarkot. The museum was once a 1800s fisherman's cottage. The cottage is made from stone, timber, and turf, and it shows the early craftsmanship of Icelandic people hundreds of years ago.
Stekkjarkot has been open to the public since 1993 and is free to visit. This is the perfect place to stop if you want to go somewhere off the beaten path. You won't find crowds at the Stekkjarkot, which allows you to best experience this old Icelandic home.Traversing Reykjanesbær
